August Reading Wrap Up

This month my reading took me to the stars! 11 out of my 21 reads had stars as either a pivotal plot point or main idea of the story (hence the cosmic background).

August was also a month of HEAVY feminism. 15/18 of my fiction books featured female (not to mention badass) leads who didn’t need a man to take their hand & lead the way. Two of my three nonfiction reads took a look at women’s lives, whether forgotten in Ancient Rome or in danger from toxic “pink” & “girly” culture. Can we also take a moment to appreciate FIVE finished series? It’s nice having all the titles on one graphic ❤️🥹.

Looking at the diversity numbers, 17/21 books are by women, only one by a nonwhite author, the same one being the only LGBTQIA+ couple as the main couple. I used my local library for 16/21 titles! I stayed in my identity bubble this month. All books that mentioned religion featured one that was or mirrored Christianity & as far as I know, all the authors I read leaned liberal. September is going to be a month of growth & reading voices that don’t match mine.

Now for the standouts!

Best read: Adversary to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer. I met Evie Sage at a vulnerable time in my life with lots of big changes, & I know I can always depend on her & her friends to make me laugh. This newest one made me so proud to know her & watching her step into her power & remain her optimistic self made me glow! The ending still shattered my heart though ☹️.

Worst read: Scythe & Sparrow by Brynne Weaver. I just don’t get it. If Butcher & Blackbird was good, why were the other two in the trilogy so bad? It was hard to root for characters I couldn’t connect with. I still finished them because I refuse to let a book win (how toxic of me 🧐).

August Quote: “I want to see what happens in a world where you don’t give up.” From The Secret World of Briar Rose by Cindy Pham.
